How to Make BBQ Sauce

Pork Ribs in homemade bbq sauce

Barbecue sauce is fantastic! Let’s face it, ribs and our other favorites would be nothing without the sauce. It has a special way of taking proteins to the next level. Of course it depends on the type of barbecue sauce you like but for many, a good homemade barbecue sauce is a little sweet, savory, tangy and of course smoky. Barbecue sauce has a very lengthy history that starts with Christopher Columbus. At the end of the 15th century Columbus brought a sauce back from Hispaniola that was used for cooking alpaca meat. That sauce is believed to be a very early version of barbecue sauce. Later, Native tribes of North and South America taught Europeans barbecuing techniques and the sauce continued to evolve from there. Now there are four basic types of barbecue sauce which are mustard, vinegar and pepper, light tomato and heavy tomato. All are excellent but the recipe provided is a light tomato BBQ sauce. With a light tomato you get the body of a tomato based sauce with some vinegar for a sweet, sour and savory combination.
