As you may have guessed, refried bean dip is from Mexico, well the refried bean part is, but the name is the product of a translation error. In Spanish refried beans are “frijoles refritos” or well fried beans in English. Despite popular belief, the beans are not fried twice but fried well hence the correct translation. In fact, they are fried until they are almost dry. It is unclear exactly when someone decided to fry already cooked beans but doing so developed good flavor. As for the translation confusion, natives of Mexico have a habit of adding re- to words in order to emphasize meaning so refritos was directly translated to refried rather than the correct well fried. Whatever their real name is, the beans are delicious and taste spectacular in dip. Best of all, refried bean dip highlights the natural flavor of the beans.

  • 1 tablespoon lime juice
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1 jalapeno pepper, finely chopped
  • 1 dash hot sauce
  • 2 cups grated Colby jack cheese

How to Make Refried Bean Dip?

Easy Refried Bean Dip Recipe – Step by Step Instructions:

1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
2. Combine the beans, lime juice, chili powder, jalapeno pepper and 1 dash of hot sauce in a bowl.
3. Stir until everything is well mixed.
4. Taste and add more hot sauce if desired.
5. Transfer the dip to one medium skillet or two small skillets that you can also serve the dip in.
6. Sprinkle an even layer of cheese over the bean mixture.
7. Place into the oven and cook for 20 minutes or until cheese is bubbly.
8. Serve hot.

Bean dip is best served as is or with a dollop of sour cream. Just put out the dip and serve with anything crunchy and salty. Tortilla chips are most common but the dip can even be eaten with toasted bread, pretzels, breadsticks, crackers or potato chips. Refried bean dip can also be used as one of the layers in seven-layer dip. Along with serving the dip as is, the mixture can be used on nachos, tostadas, in tacos, burritos, quesadillas and spread on burgers.

Refried bean dip is gooey deliciousness with just the right amount of smokiness and heat. This take on bean dip is great but you can do so much with the recipe. Corn can be added to the beans as well as other spices like cumin and paprika. Chorizo is another addition to consider. Just cook it in a pan, stir it into the dip along with the other ingredients, top with cheese, place in the oven and eat. Speaking of cheese, you can leave it out if you wish or use another type.
